Studying ACCA - Hazim shares his advice
18 Sep 2023
Muhammad Akmal Hazim Bin Raffinde (Hazim) is an ACCA learner from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), due to graduate in 2024/2025.
He decided to study towards the ACCA qualification to develop his knowledge in accounting and finance before preparing to take a deeper dive into his finance expertise. Hazim also appreciates that ACCA also gives a lot of opportunities to widen his career prospects, making it a great first step towards an exciting career.
Hazim’s studies towards ACCA
Although Hazim initially had slow progress due to difficulties in the past year, he has still noticed a shift in his development. He explained that there have been plenty of obstacles put in his way, but his perseverance has grown - and he’s noticed his developing ability to overcome any challenges while focusing on his skills to become an investment analyst.
Hazim spoke about studying at Kaplan:
“I chose Kaplan due to the ACCA syllabus, as it would widen my knowledge during my studies. The books have explanations of important concepts which learners need to excel in their studies. All the concepts are well-explained and give steps to avoid misunderstanding the topic.
On top of that, the books were structured carefully which helps me understand the concept of the subject fully. I haven’t needed to use the Academic Support Team yet as I understand the content.”
He enjoys learning via the OnDemand method offered at Kaplan, stating that he can “learn quickly within a limited time, and all of the videos are short but precise on understanding the fundamental concept of the topic.” He then uses the materials, such as the textbook, to understand how to apply a specific topic or teaching to the industry, which helped him to understand concepts a lot better.
“This application made me fully understand what I was learning, alongside giving the best decisions if I ever need to make a business decision for a client.”
Hazim uses the MyKaplan website everyday to help deepen his knowledge on ACCA topics, and has learnt how to manage any stressful factors that come his way during his studies.
Advice and tips
Hazim shared his advice for others looking to study ACCA to progress their career. He emphasised the importance of having the ability to apply ACCA topics to real life situations. For example, people who are studying a degree without practical experience may struggle to learn the topics clearly compared to someone who can apply it directly to their job role.
He continued to praise the OnDemand study method, advising that, “if you want to study part-time, I think that Kaplan OnDemand is already more than enough to pass the papers. The videos are good, and the resources are easy to understand, even if you’re a new student who wants to learn more about accounting.”
Discussing ACCA, Hazim acknowledges that “ACCA is undoubtedly hard, but it is doable if everyone is given the right platform to grow.” But he acknowledges the importance of self-discipline, and that consistency and taking advantage of all opportunities will provide the best outcome.
Further words of wisdom
Hazim offered some wise words to anyone looking to study, or currently studying, to reach their career goals:
“Don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is temporary. But the perseverance and mental strength that you build up during those moments will serve you in the future.
It’s OK to finish later than the rest, and it’s normal to feel left behind if everyone is moving forward, but the actions that you take afterwards will define who you are.”
Hazim states that he was a perfectionist and has high ambitions, but when he encountered struggles and had to repeat one of the ACCA exams, he felt demotivated - as though everything was falling apart. He is the only member in his family looking to go into accounting, so it can be very difficult to carve a career path with little guidance.
However, he appreciates that failure will become somewhat inevitable when trying something new. However, the lessons that you learn will improve your actions in the future.
He finished his story by sharing how everyone’s study journey is different:
“I feel grateful for how these lessons taught me to be better and humble. Some people pass all exams first time, and some people take longer but find themselves more successful when working in the industry.
Set the target, work for it, enjoy the things that matter to you. Choose the path that you want to take so you don’t feel regret. Reach what you can reach, and never stop improving until the end.”
